Jeanne Calment – February 21, 1875
-Jeanne was born in Arles, France, and lived there her entire life
-Vincent Van Gogh also lived in Arles, and Jeanne says she met him when she was 13, when Vincent came into her father’s shop
-When she was 21 years old, she married Fernand Calment
-Her husband was very wealthy, so Jeanne did not have to work and enjoyed many fun hobbies
-Jeanne and Fernand had one daughter, who later gave them a grandson
-Jeanne lived longer than anyone in history, finally passing away when she was 122 years old!
-She lived on her own until she was 110, then moving into a nursing home
-Several members of her family also lived very long lives, but Jeanne lived longer than both her daughter and her grandson
-A documentary called Beyond 120 Years with Jeanne Calment was made about her life
Decorations: French 122!
We used colors from France (red & blue), and decorated a few brownies with “122”
Activity: Changes in a Lifespan
We marveled at all the changes Jeanne must have seen during her lifetime, and thought about what someone born 122 years ago (1892) would have seen from then until today. We read a diary entry from a girl living in America in the 1890’s, where she described a day in her life. The boys agreed it sounded very very different from what a child today would describe! We also predicted some changes we expect to see over the next 100 years. The boys seemed to agree there would be LOTS of robots, and that people would be able to download information right into their brain from a computer.
